Expanding and Growing the Dream

A key point I consistently make in my presentations as a speaker is that we have an infinite amount of dreams within us, every one of them calling to be acknowledged.

As I have seen for myself and so many clients over the years, some dreams are there simply to remind us to dream. They kick us out of survival mode, or bring us back to living far out of the box, to living rather than surviving. Consequently, some will never be actualized but they call us to become more and in the process of achieving them we realize that dream was only the precursor to something far more authentically us or far more expansive than we ever could have imagined.

Regardless of your dream, regardless of the area you are being called to, does it bring you alive? Does it call you to develop skills you haven’t yet developed? To expand your self-image far beyond where you are today? If so, jump in!  Do not let fear get in the way trying to remind you of all your limitations, or your failings in the past. Look to your strengths and the realization that so called failures are life-lessons waiting to be learned in a way we will never forget. They are preparation for the future.

I have gone from speaking to church groups for free in 1985 so that I could develop a psychotherapy practice, terrified of making a mistake or of looking inept and God forbid, like a beginner to now being seen in 9 countries. The reality is I was a beginner and certainly looked that way. How amazing then, that after 3 months I nonetheless had developed a private practice seeing 42 patients a week and with a 6 month waiting list that lasted 17 years until I moved out of the country.

No matter what your level of expertise, if you are a professional it grows, develops, and calls you to keep on reaching for greater and greater skills while also calling you to service.I am now president of the National Speakers Association – CT chapter. Who could have known that terrified women behind the podium would now be supporting others in growing to a level she never imagined.

What’s your dream? What’s your level of sought after expertise? How are you going to achieve it?  We are never done. There is always so much more to learn and so much personal growth to achieve. From sunrise to sunset the dreams, the skills, and the personal growth bring such joy and such peace if they truly are calling you to become everything you were meant to be.

Never stop growing and evolving, life is far too short to get it all in. Relax, breathe, and jump in. The water’s fine!

7 Simple Questions for a Healthy Business

Have you asked yourself this question lately?

What do I really want out of my business?

Most of us forged out a business plan when we started our entrepreneurial venture, but what have we done lately? Our plan seemed to work years ago, but things change and today is moving faster than yesterday. Every December, I make it a habit to review my current year BEFORE January comes around. This gives me an opportunity to jump start my new goals for the new year. It also allows me time to reflect and review the things that worked and the things that didn’t work. Let’s walk through the process of asking the right questions, so we can make room for clarity in 2015.

Here are 7 simple questions I ask myself every December:

1. What worked?

2. How can I build on what worked?

3. What didn’t work?

4. What did I learn?

5. Where did I spend the most time?

6. How should I spend my time going forward?

7. What are my BIG ideas for next year and when will I implement them?

Doing this exercise gives you a clear snapshot of your business right now. It gives you a launching pad for your goals moving forward. It also allows you the opportunity to get rid of the clutter that gets in your way. The end result is a relevant business plan that makes you feel better, because you know what you need to do to get positive results. No one is going to tell you what to do or hold your hand along the way, so you need to step up and adjust your game plan.

How long will this exercise take? One option is to spend 20 minutes and get a quick snapshot. A more valuable way is to enjoy the process and think for a good 2-3 hours and really explore the possibilities of what’s possible over the next year. This is called working “on” your business and it is essential to your business growth. So grab a cup of coffee, pull up a chair and ask “What do I really want for my business?

“Getting lots of sales is my #1 priority.”

Well . . . yes, after you have created a structure for fulfilling the orders and managing the business.

Of course you need money to make money. Sales would provide that.  Please consider. . . it is very difficult to start a new business without enough resources to make it run.  Plan to invest or borrow enough so that you have a way to handle production and delivery.

CASE STUDY
Sylvia* is a chemist who is a miracle worker when it comes to creating formulas for wonderful skincare and massage products.  She had a small work space and equipment with limited capacity in which to produce her product.  And she did!

Then she found clients who loved her products and wanted more. All of a sudden Sylvia could not deliver the products in a timely fashion and maintain the quality.  She was working night and day, was exhausted, and confused about how to make things better.
It took some time being coached for her finally to open to the answer.  Get organized.  Make a plan. Get help.  She now has two part-time people who help with sales, follow-up and manufacturing.  A larger facility, bigger equipment and an employee allow her to produce enough product for a whole month.

What a difference it has made in her business!  She can now better access her creative talents to develop special Holiday packages and new skin care products.  NOW she is prepared to sell, sell, sell and her revenues are about to triple!

Grow Your Business!

Ann Meacham
Hello Small Business Owners and Leaders,

I am your blogger for the 15th of each month.  It is exciting to be a member of this cutting edge group and to be able to share a few insights that you can use to grow your business.

Leadership is a fundamental component of success regardless of the size of the business. And, in today’s competitive business environment, people who aren’t sure of how to confidently lead employees, co-workers, clients—or even themselves towards their goals will struggle with the negative effect it can have on both economic and individual results.

I have been working with business owners and executives for over 16 years, helping them develop and deploy their leadership skills to strategically grow their businesses. I focus on developing powerful leaders, building high-performance teams, managing organizations, and increasing profits.

Throughout my career I have worked with privately held companies, nonprofits, and government agencies. Through my coaching and guidance, many of my clients have experienced a 20% growth in revenues in the short term; and as high as 200% over 3-4 years.

Setting a vision and Success Indicators
“Business owners and Executives are key because they influence the well-being of an organization more than anyone else. If a company is making or losing money, it can usually be traced back to the quality of leadership utilized by the people in charge.”
Are you making or losing money for your company?
