SpeakNaked ...so the Heart can Remember

Speak to be heard,
       Pause to be remembered

The Head speaks high and fast,
the Heart speaks low and slow

 The Head understands,
                          but the Heart remembers.

Remember the last time you got a voicemail that sounded like...

"HimynameisGlennwith2nn'sDulkofromspeaknakedpleasecallmeat2034158964"

and you had to rewind it 17 times just to get their name...
never mind their number.

Isn't it a pain when that happens?

Sometimes as speakers we begin our presentations, introductions and elevator speech in the same jammed together no pause way... Getting everything out really quickly,  all in one breath.

The problem is when we speak quickly in person, our audience doesn't get the chance to stop and rewind our message. So its lost, confused and definitely not remembered

We have to give the audience time to hear, process, understand, and feel our message.  Only then, will they truly take it in, process, feel and remember it.

For an example, let's redo that previous voice mail message using your name and number.  Remember the 3 important points you want them to remember are: your name; your company; and call me. Then say your phone number with pauses so they can get it, write it down and call you.

To signal something important... pause... before... and after saying it...
Just taking a short inhale is a great way to pause.

Now...You give it a try
With your name, business and phone number

Hi...
(inhale)
My name is
(inhale)
"Your First Name"(inhale)"Your Last Name".(Pause)
(inhale)
From..."Your Business Name"(Pause)
(inhale)
Please...Call me(Pause)
(inhale)
at(inhale)(your phone number)XXX(inhale)XXX(inhale)XXXX.

Now this may feel slow... strange...or odd to you and that is natural because it is different.
Try it out on someone new (like at HSSN) and get their feedback.
You will be surprised how
a little Pause will get you remembered.

SpeakNaked and be Remembered...Maybe

Of the 107 billion who have ever lived on earth
99.9999% of people
 have been totally forgotten.

If we are remembered at all.
We are remembered for what we do,
not for what we don't do,

 You will be forgotten too.
So do something.
Something "Crazy"

You have full permission to do something... Crazy

Smile & say hello to people on the street
Create a Meetup
Make that phone call
Start that business
Say I love you
Tell that pain in the ass client "No"
Sing
Ask for the outrageous
 SpeakNaked
 Dance

You know that one thing that you would love to do but always say
 "I could never do that"
 do it
For you will too soon be forgotten...

It doesn't interest me what you do for a living.

I want to know what you ache for
and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart's longing.

It doesn't interest me how old you are.

I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool
for love, for your dream, for the adventure of being alive.

Glenn (with 2 nn's) Dulko who does SpeakNaked speaker training and Presentation Doctoring
would love to do something Crazy with you...
Love ya

SpeakNaked 75% of the Time

As a speaker prepare to speak for only 75% of the allotted time.

When you speak Life happens and your speaking time gets cut short.  Late starts, technical issues and audience questions all cut into your carefully crafted presentation.

Making you rush through or, worse yet, cut the most powerful part of your talk.  The conclusion, the call to action, the close, the end....

Too many presentations get Cut Short:
Don't let this happen to you

All of our presentations that start at least 10 minutes late..and still have to end on time.

The Sales presentations that took time to to inform the client of all the bla bla bla history of their company then ran out of time to address the costs and scheduling

Your small business presentation that was cut short and you were unable to give your contact info or  closing

And we've all seen rushing the last 5, 10 or 20 slides

The Benefits of 75% SpeakNaked are 100%
You have just given yourself breathing room if you do go over a bit
They will love ending early, you have given them the gift of time
You get to hone your presentation down even finer
You can take more questions with any extra time
You can stay and enjoy their standing ovation even longer

The solution is simple....Prepare to use 75% of the allotted time

Glenn Dulko Founder of SpeakNaked
If you are scheduled for an hour, prepare to use 45 minutes
If you are scheduled for a half hour, prepare to use 22 minutes
If you are giving an 18 minute TED talk, prepare to use 14 minutes

Now that I've use almost 75% of my blog space I invite you to become a better speaker and presenter with me, one tip at a time.  Follow my daily Twitter Speaking Tips @SpeakNaked  or contact me Glenn@SpeakNaked.com.     Thanks, Love ya,  Glenn

SpeakNaked but Cover Your Ass...

Cover your ass by always writing your own introduction.

Whenever you are going to be introduced as a speaker always write your own introduction.

Never leave the audience's first impression of you and your carefully crafted presentation to chance by being introduced by someone who may just go up there and wing it.

Writing your own introduction will:

1. Set the tone and perspective to support your presentation.
2. Increase your credibility
3. Rev up the audience's interest in you and your topic.
4. Have an introduction of appropriate length
5. Make sure your presentation's punch line or surprise isn't given away.
6. Make the introducers job so much easier, they will love you it.

I have loads of horror stories of introductions gone bad.

The International Shipping conference where the MC spent the first 20 minutes of an hour long presentation introducing the 5 panel speakers. costing the sponsor $200,000 in presentation time and draining  all of the audience's attention.
The introduction that finished with "and when he's done we all get an IPod". Thus killing the speakers whole presentation and surprise gift.
The introduction of a speaker on death penalty law that mentioned that the speaker "was a dancer and high school cheerleader".  True 25 years ago but irrelevant and costing the speaker her credibility
And all of the introduction's with mispronounced names, wrong topics and mangled titles.

You do not want to start your presentation having to dig yourself out of a hole
created by a bad introduction.

The way to help prevent this is to always write your own, specifically tailored for your audience
letting them know 4 things:

1  What the topic is
2. What is in it for them
3.,Why they should listen to you
4. What do they have to do and for how long

Here is a simple template to create a 60 second introduction

Good Morning my name is (name of the introducer)
I am the (introducer's title or position)
Wouldn't it be great if we could all...(What's in it for them)
For the next hour we are going to learn about (Your Topic)
Our speaker (Your Name)
Who is a... (Tell what you do so they can hire you)
Who has... (List a few of your relevant credentials).
Will share with us his/her expertise on (Your Topic)
and his/her presentation (Name of your presentation)
Welcome (Your Name)

Change this anyway you want make longer/shorter, more serious/funny, to serve your presentation, your style and your audience.

Other introduction Tips:

The shorter the presentation the shorter the introduction
Print out your introductions in the biggest font that will fit on one page.
Type out each phrase on a separate line so the speaker knows what to emphasize and when to pause
Personally hand it to the person going to introduce you.
Then make sure they pre-read it and answer any questions. (like how to pronounce your name)

Glenn Dulko Founder of SpeakNaked Speaker Training
The right introduction will:

Set you up for success
Set the Tone of your presentation
Build your credibility
Bridge obstacles and objections
Make the audience your friend
Get you remembered
Get you hired again and again

all even before you step on stage.....

Stand up, Step out, Speak Naked
and always write your own introduction, to cover your ass.

Speak Naked and Love Public Speaking

Hi. I'm Glenn Dulko and I'll be dropping in here on the 2nd of each month.  I am a professional public speaking coach, and I help emerging speakers find their voice, define their message, and design their delivery. The result? Speakers with confidence, clarity and the power to change lives.

I believe that when you stand on stage, in front of an audience, sharing your gifts, your ideas and your passions, what you are really saying is “I love you.”

What I hear you saying is “I love you so much that I will face the scariest thing in the world (the fear of public speaking) and risk everything to make sure you receive this gift.

Love. This is what I believe is in the heart of every great speaker, and in you.

The world needs more of your inspiration, passion and love. This is why I work with emerging speakers, and why I created Speak Naked speaker and presentation trainings. My passion is to encourage, empower and liberate game-changing ideas, inspirational stories and infectious passion from the speakers who want to share them.

To Speak Naked is to unclutter ourselves and strip away everything: the PowerPoint, papers, podium, and pretenses that hide us from our message and our audiences. Once we come out of hiding, we learn the secrets of communication and public speaking to truly connect, move and lead our audience.

Believe it. When you Speak Naked you can effectively and lovingly talk with any audience, anytime, anywhere.

Do you want to Speak Naked and learn to Love public speaking?
Then get in touch: glenn@speaknaked.com
I offer individual coaching and group trainings to emerging speakers and business leaders, and would love to help you.

Until next time. Stand up, Step out and Speak Naked.
