The Psychology of Success Part 3!

In parts 1 and 2 of the psychology of success we discussed a few methods that all achievers use, whether they know of not, to become successful, as well as a few of the laws of success. This third part will discuss a few additional laws of success.

Humans have roamed this planet and been working hard for a long time; so as a species we already know how to do hard work when it is necessary. However, what’s newer on the human scene is the mental and psychological laws that either get us to believe that we can do something of believe that we can’t do something. So what are these additional laws and how do we harness their power? These mental and psychological laws are the Law of Belief, the Law of Expectations, and the Law of Attraction according to Brain Tracy, the author of, The Psychology of Achievement.
In the Law of Belief we are constantly screening our thoughts and environment and subsequently allowing in some information, while not allowing in other information. Sadly, we mistakenly keep out some empowering information in order to make space for some false dis-empowering information. Unfortunately, this false dis-empowering information strengthens those limiting beliefs of ours that often create our less than optimal reality.
With the Law of Expectations we often find that we get what we expect, as well as, what other people expect. This programing starts when we are just kids. Our well-meaning parents, coaches, and teachers are constantly saying “No” to us and “Be careful.” Thus, we learn to expect less of our little selves in this big scary world. However, we can still stand taller and see further on that horizon if we change our expectations of ourselves by re-programing ourselves for bigger and better things. In order to optimize our re-programming we should also include the expectations that people who look up to us have us. Are we going to let our younger siblings, our peers, or team, our co-workers, or even our own children down?
Next, the Law of Attraction basically states that our dominant thought patterns attract what we presently have in our lives. If we control our thoughts and create a persistent positive mental attitude, feelings, and expectations, even if we have to fake it a little bit in the beginning, we can indeed get ourselves to believe that our life is full of positives. These positives will in turn attract other positives, such as, positive people and positive things. This sounds pretty good, doesn’t it? And it sounds very doable too, right?

So here it is finally being wrapped up in a three part series of how you can improve your life through the psychology of achievement through following a few of the methods of achieves and the unwritten laws of success. Follow these laws and follow Brian Tracy and you’ll sure to achieve more in your life.

The Psychology of Achievement Part 2!

In my last blog on the psychology of success I shared with you that achievers, whether they know it or not, practice many of the following methods: Peace of Mind, Health and Energy, Loving Relationships, Worthy Goals and Ideals, and a Feeling of Personal Fulfillment or Self-Actualization. I briefly talked about each one and ended with what Dr. Abraham Maslow called our highest human need of self-actualization in which all of our basic needs are met and now we are working on doing something that is meaningful and fulfilling.

However, self-actualization is not an easy things to obtain. Henry David Thoreau said, “Most people live lives of quiet desperation.” So, why is this? Why is it that after a life time of working only 5% of people ever achieve the kind of financial freedom that will allow them to do what they want to do, when they want to do it? Brian Tracy, the author of, The Psychology of Achievement, believes that even though we have been born into the richest and most advanced society that the world has ever seen, we struggle to achieve because we are born into this world without an operating manual. It’s like having a super computer without the owner’s manual. That computer, like ourselves, is capable of doing amazing things, but without the operating manual, we are lost, and so much potential and capability is wasted.
So what do we do about this? Well, if we want to get the best out of ourselves then we have to learn a few laws of success like the Law of Control, Law of Accident, and Law of Cause and Effect. In the Law of Control we want to feel like we have some input or control over what happens in our lives. Unfortunately, though, most of us don’t control our thoughts and then our thoughts run wild and make us feel like we aren’t good enough to control anything, or accomplish anything of real value. In regards to the Law of Accident, many of us feel that life just happens to us. We won’t become achievers with that mindset. We have to make things happen. In addition, in order to become an achiever we are also going to have to get a better grasp on the law of Cause and Effect. Every effect or outcome has a cause. We can cause the effects or outcomes that we desire if we believe it can happen and then do the necessary work to bring it about.

So there is our next step in our own psychology of achievement. Let’s master the Law of Control, Law of Accident, and Law of Cause and Effect. Master these laws will move us a step closer to being the achiever that we want to be.

The Psychology of Achievement! Part 1

Brian Tracy, the author of, The Psychology of Achievement, asks, “Why are some people more successful than others?” He eventually answers his question with the statement that achievers, whether they know it or not, practice many of the following methods: Peace of Mind, Health and Energy, Loving Relationships, Worthy Goals and Ideals, and a Feeling of Personal Fulfillment or Self-Actualization.

Perhaps you use at least one of these success methods, or could at least see yourself using one of them very soon. Is what you are doing right now giving you peace of mind? If it is not, then stop struggling against your natural tendencies and find out what creates a sense of peace for you. Down the road you will thank yourself for this. Do you find yourself with an abundance of health and energy? Are you taking care of yourself and doing what you were meant to do? If not, it will wear away your health and energy, and without that we don’t have much. Do you have loving relationships? In the end, these relationships really are why you do what you do. If you lose sight of this you won’t be happy or successful, no matter what you do.

People need worthy goals and ideals. It is what drives us as the highest species on the food chain. It gives us that inner feeling of being successful. If you have nothing to shoot for, then you’ll find a meaningless life of turmoil and struggle. Finally, if you haven’t found personal fulfillment yet, hopefully, someday you will. Personal fulfilment or self-actualization is what Dr. Abraham Maslow talked about on his hierarchy of needs as being the final step to a happy life once our lower more basic needs have been met.

So there you have it. Pick one or more of the categories above and spend some time truly thinking about it, as well as figuring out how to apply it to your own life and you too will become more cognizant of the psychology of your own success. Subsequently, success is sure to follow.

Don't Let The Start Stop You!

Nike says, “Just do it!” And I must admit there has been many times that I have followed that advice and have “just done it.” Now I’m going to honest with you here. I didn’t always know what I was doing! And sometimes I actually had to apologize for doing it…
As a matter of fact, many times I did not know what I was doing and many times I had to apologize, but I somehow had this blind faith that somehow, someway, things would find a way to work themselves out…
And you know what? Things usually have found a way to work themselves out.
Now don’t get me wrong here. This has not always been painless. I have made many mistakes and have often taken the long way home, but somehow I have always made it home, if you know what I mean…
This whole conversation reminds me of a new friend I made the other day who asked if I had any advice for an aspiring writer. My advice was to give yourself permission to write a bad first draft. If you can give yourself permission to write poorly at first, eventually you will surprise yourself with your ability. It’s just like everything else in life…
In other words, “Don’t Let the Start, Stop You!”
How about you? Have you taken any chances lately? Have you given yourself permission to do something new poorly at first? If so, then I think you’re on the right road. Furthermore, I think this road may even delightfully surprise you
However, when this road leads you to victory, then it will be your turn to teach others the concept of, “Don’t Let the Start, Stop You!” Enjoy.

How to Stop Wasting Your Time and Get People to Read Your Blog

Think about it for a moment. You spend valuable time thinking up your topic for your next post. You’re using Evernote on your smart phone to make notes on ideas for titles. You spend time day dreaming, perhaps putting your marriage or your job at risk, crafting your next creative post.

The day arrives that you’re ready to put all of your creative spirit and your passionate energy into your blog post. You move meetings or other appointments to make the time to write, impacting other people’s lives. You pull up your word processor and the creative juices begin flowing as you construct amazing content that could potentially alter the life paths of your readers.

Content Rules: How to Create Killer Blogs That Engage Customers and Ignite Your Business

You read it over a few times and then sit back with great satisfaction with what you created. You select an eye-catching image to go along with the post and pick out a handful of striking search key words and then set up your post to go live on your designated day. You sit back and feel fulfilled that you completed your commitment to provide a thought provoking article, and then go on with your life. But your job as a blog contributor doesn’t end there (queue the sound bite of a record album getting scratched).

So why did you just go through all of the effort I described above?; to write valuable content
that will get read by many, of course. But have you looked at your past blog posts lately? How many have actually read your posts? Eight people? How about 2 or 14 or even 11? So why haven’t your posts been noticed by more readers? It’s because you’re not doing the most important part of being a blog writer… promoting your posts.

Writing the post is only a part of the process. Very few will actually find your post to read it if you’re not taking the time to share it. So, start increasing the readership of your blog posts by promoting them online today. As soon as your post goes live, copy the address of your blog post in the URL window of your browser. Post that URL along with a brief comment on your following social media channels:

  • Your personal Facebook page: post it in the block at the top of the page, right over the words “What’s on your mind.”
  • Your business Facebook page (if you have one): post your comments and paste the URL link in the box that contain the words “What have you been up to?”
  • Your Linkedin profile: immediately upon logging in to your Linkedin profile, you’ll see a little narrow box at the top of the page with the words “Share an update.” This is where you’ll say a few words and then paste the link to your blog post.
  • Your Twitter page: you will see a narrow box at the top of the screen that contain the words “What’s happening?” Writing in a few words and then past your post URL there.
  • Linkedin groups that you subscribe to: go to the discussion page of those groups and along with a few words to entice group members, paste your post URL into as many groups as you can. Don’t forget the enticing words. Group administrators don’t like it when you only paste your post URL. And don’t forget to post it in our own HSSN Linkedin discussion group.
  • Facebook groups: if you belong to any Facebook groups, do the same as I described above.
  • Our HSSN Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/hartfordspringfieldspeakers): Lucinda Smith does a great job of putting up our posts on our group Face, but yet very few make comments. At the very least, when she puts YOUR post up, LIKE it or make a brief comment.
  • Other blog posts: if you subscribe to other blogs, make a comment on another author’s blog post and include the URL to your post.
  • Spend $5 on Fiverr: no, I didn’t misspell it. If you haven’t heard of Fiverr.com, you’re missing out. Spend $5 (plus .50) on this website and get your blog post blasted to thousands of potential readers across the globe. Do this as many times as you’d like, with many different sellers.

Connect with Bloggers Today!Your blog posts are not going to get found on their own. Social media works best when content writers promote their work. I know this flies in the face of what our mothers, fathers, and teachers taught us. We were told to stop bringing attention to ourselves because they believed that was a selfish thing to do. It’s time to shed the barriers our caregivers put on us as children and begin standing up and tooting our own horns!

One last tip for you bloggers… please craft blog titles that entice people to click on it to read it. Some of the most successful ones are: create a sense of urgency, make it personal, ask a question, make it clever, make it curious, and use numbers (5 Things That Will Make You More Money).

A Stroke of Insight Part 2

Last month in the first part of this blog series we talked about the brilliant Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor and her stroke of insight. Dr. Taylor is a Harvard trained brain scientist that was named Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World in 2008. At the young age of 37 years old Dr. Taylor experienced a massive stroke that she claims is the best thing that ever happened to her because it finally allowed her more connected peaceful right side of her brain to move to the forefront because her left side analytical and judgmental brain had been incapacitated.

Well, the beauty of this story is that with a lot of help, Dr. Taylor did make a full recovery over her eight years of rehab. However, eight years later, she wasn’t the same Dr. Taylor that she had been in her previous life. During those eight years Dr. Taylor was very careful which parts of her left dominating hemisphere was allowed to be restored. She carefully selected what she wanted to reprogram in her mind. She did everything she could to not let judgment back in while she continued to focus on her right hemisphere connectedness with people. She saw us all dependent and interconnected with others in a free flowing form of energy. She didn’t ever want to let her left hemisphere’s judgment destroy that connectedness to herself and others again. Furthermore, she vowed to never let insecurity take up a permanent residence ever again in her brain.

Now, Dr. Taylor isn’t perfect and sometimes these negatives from her story-telling left hemisphere gets too chatty every once in a while. But, since her stroke, the difference now is that she can recognize the chatter and then silence it. And the good thing is that we too can learn to recognize the chatter and then silence it. We too can live a life of more peacefulness, and connectedness with others thanks to Dr. Taylor’s stoke of insight…

So what’s the lesson here? Well, I’d say it is for all of us to realize that we have much more control over our thoughts than we think we do. We don’t have to be a victim to our thoughts and the chatter in our brain anymore. Let’s do what Dr. Taylor did. Recognize the chatter and then silence it for a more peaceful, fulfilling way of life.

The Hallway of Choices

A passage way seems to be in view at the end of this hallway. The passage way is a metaphor representing your chief definite aim in life, your ultimate goal or that "one thing" in life that you must have before you die. At the end of this hallway the "one thing" you seek awaits for you to show up.
There are hundreds of doors leading up to that passage to your goal. The doors on the left represent sacrifices, disciplines, hard work, commitment, integrity, good habits, good environments, pursuit of education and faith based decisions. The doors on the right represent no true life structure, bad habits, poor effort, lack of education, addictive natures, terrible environments, lack of faith, poor attitude and continued bad decisions. The right side correlates to a failure mindset and zero results outcome.
Our life is the sum of our choices and disciplines over the last year, last five years and last 10 years.
How would you sum up your life accomplishments in 2014, have you improved or have you suffered setbacks?
As you gaze down the hallway in the picture above, what is that "one thing" you want to accomplish in 2015? To accomplish great things you may have to leave old environments behind and eliminate bad habits that may be holding you back. You need to make the right decisions not just once and a while but all the time. If you have been in and out of the doors on the right side it is time to cross the hallway and start entering the doors on the left side. Start right now with setting a plan for yourself. Copy and paste this picture on your computer or journal and write that "one thing" you will pursue in 2015. SET OUT TO ACCOMPLISH THIS "ONE THING" NO MATTER WHAT!
The following is my Pattern for Successful Change.
This is "Golden Nugget #3" .
1. Purchase a Good Journal: Document your life progress everyday. Commit to 15 minutes of journalizing everyday. It should become your biography of change.
2. Define that "One Thing": Write it in your Journal. What is it that your going to attempt in 2015? What will make you truly happy so that you will enjoy this ride through life?
3. Leave the right side of the hallway mentioned above: In the month of January make a commitment to eliminate the worst habit you have in life. "Do not make this a New Years resolution! Make it your personal commitment to you!" If you're successful in eliminating the first bad habit, attack the next bad habit you have in the month of February. If you haven't eliminated your first one in January stay with it. In fact, if you only eliminate one bad habit in 2015 you should consider yourself a success.
4. Adopt Three Positive Attributes to your Life: Write these attributes in the front of your Journal so you see them everyday when your are journalizing your progress.
5. Read a book a month in 2015: Complete a book once a month that will assist you in attaining that "One Thing" you are in pursuit of.

I look forward to hearing about your positive metamorphosis in 2015.

Sincerely,
John

Melodrama Part 2

Daniel Blanchard- Author and Speaker!
In my last blog I talked about drama being everywhere. Furthermore, I offered advice on how to be that leader that we were meant to be by better understanding our history as a species. For about 300,000 years we were hunters and gathers and we survived on our own aggressive individual survival instincts. And as odd as it may sound today, in the old days, being aggressive, selfish, and even somewhat brutal was a virtue in some ways and helped our species survive. Then I talked about how the more civilized agrarian age came along about 30,000 years ago, but that sometimes our 300,000 years of basic survival instincts still overpowers our 30,000 year history of more civilized farming way of life.
So, where do we go from here? Well, to city living of course! So now to confuse us humans even more, within roughly the last hundred years or so we have moved off the farms with their strict way of living and moved into the cities where once again our norms and social pressures have confused us by changing. To make it even worse, we’re left to our own to figure it all out without a map or any directions. Hmm… like us men would use the map or directions, anyways… It’s tough to be human.
In the busy cities, our minds have become even busier and even fuller of mental melodrama. Our psyche, or that little voice we constantly hear in our minds won't ever shut the lights off. We have become so accustomed to this little voice, or maybe I should say noise in our heads that it doesn't even seem weird to us anymore. The funny thing is that it's frequently wrong and it is also constantly contradicting itself. For example, does this inner conversation sound familiar guys? "I don't think she likes me. No. she likes me. Why wouldn't she like me? Well, she doesn't like me because I'm too short. So give it up and don't even bother asking her. No. I'm going to ask her out. Don't..."
Hey, that’s how our mind talks. It’s very melodramatic. And believe it or not, as crazy as our “psyche” can be at creating all of this mental anguish within us, we still listen to this mental dramatic conversation and allow this sometimes-crazy inner roommate of ours with the weird name to wreck our happiness. I bet none of us would allow a real roommate to talk to us like that!

So, what is the leadership advice here? Well, it’s the same advice that I offered in my last blog. We have to remember that we’re all in this together and sometimes our history as an imperfect species, as well as a constantly changing world, makes us do stupid things. So let’s look beyond our imperfections and all this melodrama and let’s move towards being that sturdy leader that is inside of every one of us!

Melodrama Part 1

Daniel Blanchard- Author and Speaker!
Drama, drama, drama! Drama seems to be all around us and all inside of us. It’s everywhere, and it’s mentally draining. Why is the world so full of drama? Why are we so full of drama? Is there any way to rise above this mental melodrama that resides both inside and outside of us and become the true sturdy and steady leader in mind and body that we were meant to be?
In order to understand some of the drama that lives both inside and outside of us we need to understand some of our history as a species. Surprisingly, some of our vices, things that get us into hot water today, used to be virtues and helped us survive as a species in the past. You see, us humans were hunters and gathers for about 300,000 years. We survived on our own individual aggressive survival instincts. As odd as it may sound today, in the old days, being aggressive, selfish, and even somewhat brutal was a virtue when dealing with animals and potential mates. This selfish, individualist behavior helped our species to survive way back in the wild when we were still trying to stand up straighter and master the use our opposing thumbs to manipulate tools.
Then along came the agrarian age, in which we moved away from strictly hunting and gathering and moved into the era of farming. Through the life of farming we formed civilizations with social norms and social pressures to comply and lose those old individualist ways. However, the agrarian pressure to live a more civilized life has only been around for about 30,000 years and it is sometimes overwhelmed by the 300,000 years of basic survival instincts.
So, when someone does something out of the norm that others frown upon, maybe this bad behavior is really a left over relic from our rising as a species rather than our overall failure as a species. Hey, let’s give ourselves a break, it’s tough to be human; even if we are on the top of the food chain.

So, what is the leadership advice here? Well, it's to know that we are all in this together and we are all struggling with our history as an imperfect species, as well as our own psyche. And that's why we all tend to occasionally act crazy and do irrational things sometimes. So, now that we know why people, including ourselves, don't always do what's wise, we now have taken our first step in pushing aside the crazy mental melodrama and are now moving forward towards being that sturdy leader inside of everyone of us!

Done.Right.Now!

I know what you want. My aim in the coming months is to give you what you want.

  • You want to get it Done.
  • You want to get it Done, Right.
  • You want to get it Done, Right, Now!

My name is Tony Sherman, and I'm The Implementation Rabbi. I help professional services teams and small businesses to get more done with less. You've already met Rick who helps you make room for clarity. One of the keys to clarity is to drive out a solid definition of DONE. Not your personal definition of done but the customers’. The “DONE” that drives the highest value. The problem with done is, in most of our lives the old adage holds true “it takes 90% of the time to get 90% of the job done, and the other 90% of the time to get the rest of the 10% of the job done”.

Once you've got DONE defined and under control, we need to make sure that we’re doing it right for everybody. Everybody understands the same goal and is working at their highest and best selves. Over the next few months, I'll introduce some of the basic tenets of agile methodologies. These will help you and your teams to communicate quickly and clearly. These are simple and powerful communication techniques, and along with a no fail innovation approach that makes sure that when you hit challenges, as you always will in high-value work, you, your team, and your client can work to rapid breakthroughs.

The “NOW”, in “Done.Right.Now!” is a powerful set of team tools most of which are free. These tools help small businesses to accelerate the collaboration and to drive very quickly to delivering high-value. And then using this high-value to leverage themselves to become their client’s trusted partner.

My name is Tony Sherman, The Implementation Rabbi at ImpactTeams.com. I'm excited as we start this journey of delivering high-value to customers, quickly, with no rework, and with highly energized teams.

See you next month.

It's Time To Make Room For Clarity!

Hello Fellow Entrepreneurs!

How would you like to be more focused, more engaged, and more satisfied in your business? Well, on the 30th of each month, we’ll take a step back from our crazy day and get you “locked” into your passion, with solutions on this blog.

My name is Rick Woods. As a Professional Organizer, I help my clients “Make Room For Clarity”, by helping them get rid of the clutter that gets in their way. In this blog, we will go way beyond the physical clutter that sits in our office. We’ll also tap into the mental clutter that is holding us back from achieving greatness.

After working in the retail corporate industry for over 12 years, I decided to make a change. Too much travel and last minute marathon demands, became the “clutter” in my life. My wife and kids were home and I was constantly on the road. So I left that corporate world, focused on my family, and researched the Professional Organizing industry. After creating my company, The Functional Organizer, LLC, and building my client base, I joined many organizations: The National Association of Professional Organizers, Toastmasters, BNI, Various Chamber Events, and The Hartford Springfield Speakers Network. It was through these organizations, that I made connections with other hungry like-minded entrepreneurs.

I regularly appear on a daily local network television program called "Mass Appeal", providing tips to viewers on how to get more organized.

In addition to working with residential and business clients, I have also recently launched a podcast titled “Make Room For Clarity”. Each episode is available for free download in the iTunes store. This podcast dives into issues that effect our everyday lives at home and at work. Issues that go way beyond organizing. Recently published topics include Overeating Addiction, Clutter in our Communication, Corporate Clutter, and Organizing Kids for School. Future topics will cover Menu Planning, Toxic Hazards in our homes, and Suicide Prevention. The show focuses on helping you turn your negatives into positives, by getting rid of the clutter that gets in your way.  In the Fall, I will be releasing my new book titled, "Make Room For Clarity", which will focus on removing the overconsumption of stuff in our lives. I'll show you how to take control of your physical clutter and provide solutions on gaining clarity.

Success and Happiness? Yes, You Can!

Linda Spevacek - Coach, Speaker, Author

Hello Readers,
My name is Linda Spevacek and I have the pleasure of sharing success tips with you on the 20th of each month. I am a speaker, coach, and author with a background in the high-intensity world of investments and dealmaking. My specialty is teaching entrepreneurs, as well as leaders seeking to move up within a company, how to achieve prosperity in every sense of the word: business success, joy in your relationships, personal fulfillment and peace of mind.

If there is one thing I've learned along this journey of striving to achieve and be the best at what you do, it is that our business lives and our personal lives are inseparably intertwined. The good news is that you need never sacrifice one over the other: having success and happiness together is not only possible, it is essential! [That is your tip for today ;-)]

I loved every minute of my high-powered corporate career, until meetings and policies and reporting took all the fun out of actually doing business! And with two young children, a husband, a house, and a desire to have more time for community activities, friends and yes, I'll say it - tennis and skiing - I hired a personal coach to help me set up a business lifestyle that worked for me. I received my own coaching certification, hung out a shingle, and never looked back.

Speaking topics include Become the CEO of Your Life, Get Your S.P.A.R.K, and Life Balance for the Real World: "How I Managed to Run a Business, Celebrate 30 Years of Wedded Bliss, Serve as an Elected Official, Get My College Kid Out of the House for the 5th Time, and Write a Book With 7 Other Women, Without Losing My Mind!" Individual and corporate trainings focus on leadership development, business building based on your expertise, and strengthening your success mindset, to name a few. A Blog for Entrepreneurs - Meet Bill Corbett

bill corbett, love limits lessons, parent coach, parenting expert
Hello fellow Movers & Shakers and welcome blog readers. I am an author, entrepreneur, coach and professional speaker. I’m also the person pulling together this collective blog of incredible professionals who will add their spin and expertise to help other entrepreneurs and marketers grow their brand. To start out this first month, I will ask each of our bloggers to use their first post to introduce themselves. They are also always welcome to promote their brand, their services and their products.

Each post will contain a message that will provide assistance to other business professional with something the blogger learned along their journey. The post can offer advice, tell a story, provide a methodology, relate an incident, lay out a testimony, outline a new process, share an idea or just be a rant about something they experienced. Each post should offer some sort of expertise or experience to help other professionals build their business or their brand.

So who am I? I’m a parenting expert and a behavior
bill corbett, parenting class, love limits lessons
specialist by trade. I’m the author of the award-winning book Love, Limits & Lessons: A Parent’s Guideto Raising Cooperative Kids, and creator of the parent education program by the same name. I’m also the producer and host of two television shows, Creating Cooperative Kids and From the Soapbox to the Stage. After spending 30 years working in corporate IT, earning a good salary and hating every day of going to the office, I decided to follow my dream of working for myself full time, helping adults better understand their children and teens. With an advanced degree in clinical psychology, I started my parenting business back in 1995 but ran it part time, off to the side.

As a serial entrepreneur, my parenting business was the last of several businesses I built, all while working full time. And it was this parenting business that gave me the greatest joy and sense of satisfaction. I finally knew that this one would eventually bring in the kind of money I really wanted to earn, and the joy of loving what I do full time. It has been a wonderful journey and one that I’ll travel for the remainder of my enjoyable time on this earth.
