This always happens right before vacation...

Have you ever noticed your back goes out at the worst times?  Usually right before you are about to leave for vacation or about to meet up with friends, and you feel that pinch in your back. Or you turn just the right way and know that something is wrong. It's too late to call your Massage Therapist or Bowen Therapist, so what do you do?  Here are my best ideas to help you get back on track:
1. Applying ice is the quickest way to get some relief. It can help decrease the inflammation. You can try 10 minute intervals. If you are not fond of ice you can try switching between ice and heat. Ten minutes of ice and then 10 minutes of heat for as long as feels comfortable for you.

2. If this happens to you often, you may want to  invest in a foam roller. The roller releases the trigger points in your muscles as you put pressure on them. Once you find the trigger point, and at the same time you want to take a breath in and count to 15. You should be able to feel the release in the muscle. Along with a decrease in your pain.

3. Water is a very important ingredient to keeping your back and body pain free. It may not give you immediate relief but it is very important to keep your body hydrated. Many of us today are very dehydrated. It is recommended that you drink half your weight in ounces. And you may be thinking that is too much, there's no way I can drink that much. So I suggest taking a water challenge, for one week drink close to that. Then see how you feel. Are you feeling less pain and stiffness? did you sleep better? How was your foggy brain? You be the judge of how much water you need.

4. If you find yourself feeling tight in your low back, here is a great exercise to help you feel looser quickly. Please do not do this if you are in great pain. Before you do the exercise, stand up straight and lower your hands to the floor. This is an assessment to see how far you can go. Then do the exercise and retest. You should be able to get further in your reach.

What are your home remedies for pain? Email me at jacqueline@bowenhealingcenter.com and let me know what how you did with the plate exercise. you are only one day away from living your chronically happy pain free life!

Is Podcasting the New Business Card?

I recently completed an interview with a guest and he said something afterwards that caught my attention. He said that he was interested in creating his own podcast, as he thought of a podcast as a great business card.

This got me thinking about the primary functions of creating your own podcast and how it fits into your business. I do think that a podcast can be a great business card, and here are some ways in which I think it can fill that function.

1. A podcast gives people a chance to get to know you.
In business we want to work with people we know, like and trust, and when people can hear your voice in a podcast, it gives them the opportunity to really get a sense of who you are and what you are about. When you meet new prospects, you can send them to your website or iTunes and ask them to listen to a few episodes of your podcast.

2. A podcast helps you meet new people. Unlike a paper business card, a podcast can actually help you meet new people! When you interview guests, you will make new friends, have the possibility of getting introduced to new prospects, and expand your reach. And since podcasts are syndicated, people will find your podcast on your own.

3. Having your own podcast is a conversation starter. Having your own podcast gives you an interested departure point for a conversation. When people see that you have your own podcast they will often want to know when and why you started it and what that experience has been like for you When you are a podcast host it creates a unique and memorable way for people to recall who you are and what you do.

4. A podcast shows that you are serious and professional. I don't mean that you are serious as in lacking a sense of humor, but rather that you took the time to start and maintain a podcast which shows that you have initiative and follow through. Just like if you saw a business card that looked like it took time and effort to create, when potential prospects can see that you have a podcast that you've maintained for some period of time, it tells them something about your character.

Of course there are additional benefits of having a podcast, some of which I've already written about and others which I'll write more about in the future, but a podcast can function as a powerful business card. It's a business card that actually goes out and gathers prospects for you (through syndication) and one where people can listen to your voice, get to know you and what you're about and demonstrates credibility. Is a podcast the new business card? I think it can be!

The "Happiness and Success PROCESS"...

I like to simplify things and teach others how to do so also, so I have developed a simple "Three Step Process" that I use for all my trainings...

I have taught Networking (the Process of Developing Win-Win Relationships), Strategic Planning (Where I Am - Where I Want to Go - How I will Get There) and other personal and professional development topics for years. I have used several approaches that I have fined tuned again and again, all stressing "what to do, step by step", kind of text book style. While knowing "step by step" procedures are useful, just "doing" things will not ensure "Happiness and Success" by itself. "Step by Step" is just the last component of my three step process - here it is:
Foundation:
Every process needs a foundation...  Then you can move on to Preparation and Step  By Step. The "Happiness and Success GPS" foundation is:
1.      Maintaining a Positive Mindset: Our Mindset, be it positive or negative is always OUR CHOICE, as we have discussed in previous blogs.
2.      Being an Unconditional Giver: if you give unconditionally, the Law of Attraction guarantees that incredible things will happen not only to those you give to, but also to you in return.
The Foundation SHOULD be the same for ALL Processes, whether it be Networking, Strategic Planning, or anything else - you may make money but Success cannot come without Happiness...

Preparation:
This is analysis and homework. In Networking, this is identifying what you  really do (value statement, not "I'm a Financial Planner", "I'm a Realtor", etc.), who for (your preferred clients), preferred networking contacts (people to share referrals with), then developing your presentations, identifying networking opportunities and such. In Personal Strategic Planning, this is analyzing yourself: writing down your accomplishments, what you are grateful for, what you love to do, what you stand for, etc., so you can find your life's Purpose and Why - ongoing personal development...

Step by Step:
This is the "what to do" part of the process. In Networking, this is things you should do at a Networking Meeting (listen, set up coffee dates to get to know people, introduce people to others that they should meet - giving, etc.) and what you shouldn't do (try to sell to attendees), and also what to do AFTER the meeting - steps to keep the Process going... In Personal Strategic Planning, this is writing down where you are now, writing down where you want to go in ALL areas of your life (personal, professional, relationships, financial, etc.), then writing down time-bound goals to get there...

FOOD FOR THOUGHT:
Start with your Personal Strategic Planning Process - this Process is the Foundation for all other Processes... Here's a quick outline for you to use:
·         Foundation: Positive Mindset - Unconditional Giver.
·         Preparation: Find and write down your Purpose and Why
·         Step by Step: Set those goals and take action - ENJOY!!!

Business Card Etiquette...Do You Comply?

Business cards....such an important part of who you are as an entrepreneur, speaker or business individual.  This tiny little cardboard rectangle can be so useful after you have made an acquaintance offering a myriad of information for the connection afterward.  And with so many other subjects encompassing ETIQUETTE, indeed, there is a formal protocol for giving and receiving business cards... Do you comply?

First and foremost, always check your business cards before you go to an event.  Make sure they are not folded over, bent or have coffee stains on them.  Place them in a shirt pocket or card holder so they are readily available for exchange in the blink of an eye.

Never offer (or in some cases shove) your card in someones face immediately upon meeting them.  By this I mean - "Hi, my name is Jane, here's my card"(whip out card and present to new acquaintance)   This is rude and certainly unexpected and most likely end up with your card being tossed in the nearest trash bin.

In fact, protocol indicates that you should wait to be asked for your card and then reciprocate.  Now your thinking, how do I get the other person to ask for my card?  Simply stated, ask for theirs.   In 9 times out of 10, if you ask for a card from someone, they usually reciprocate and ask for yours.   If they did not, take a hint,  they didn't want it anyway!!

Once the exchange has been made, study the card for a few moments.  Mention something about the card in your hand, like the design or color or perhaps even inquire about the address.  Something in the realm of small talk that makes the other person reply.  This shows an genuine interest in the person.  Your job is to listen.

Lastly, follow up with your new found connection.  The next day or so, drop an email, call or write a note to express how nice it was to meet, say hello or just stay connected.   This can go a long way to making a new connection, a lasting connection.

Happy Business Card Exchanging

Make MUCH More Money in MUCH Less Time with a Product and Service Funnel

If you are a coach, consultant, speaker, or another type of "expert" entrepreneur, and all you offer are big-ticket products and services, such as keynote speeches or large $1,000+ coaching and consulting packages, then you are missing out on a HUGE market of customers and clients and multiple income streams.  You also are working a lot harder for your money than you have to.

First you MUST MUST MUST have something of GREAT VALUE that is FREE in EXCHANGE for an email address.  Your email list is your pot of gold. Your give-away must be something that is so juicy and urgent for your target customers and clients, that it can't be passed up.  Sorry, a "newsletter" doesn't cut it anymore. Yawn. You have to be more creative.

Then, you want to have at least one product or service at each layer of the funnel, so that you can meet people at their respective price points and work them down your funnel into higher ticket items.

Some people may only ever buy the $25-$100 item, but if you didn't have one, you'd miss out on that revenue completely.  And the people who bought your lower-priced products and services are more likely to eventually buy the higher ticket ones, because they got to know, like, and trust you first.

It's much harder to sell a $5,000 product or service to a stranger than someone who has been a customer before.

So what kinds of things can you sell in your funnel?  Here are some examples.

Note: Product and service pricing is different for every business.  Some webinars might be $25 and others might be $100-$200 or more. It depends on your content, your customers, your brand and expert status, demonstrative results, and other factors.

FREE
  • e-Book
  • short report
  • audio or video series
  • daily/weekly tips
  • first chapter of a longer book

$25-$100
  • book or workbook
  • a paid teleseminar or webinar
  • a ticket to a live 1-2 hour presentation
  • a subscription to a magazine or membership website

$100-$500
  • a system or toolkit (a set of templates)
  • a 4 to 6-week webinar/teleclass
  • a consultation or coaching session
  • a 1-2 day workshop
$500-$1,000
  • a speaking fee
  • a smaller coaching/consulting package
  • an action plan
  • a higher-level conference/workshop
$1,000-$5,000
  • a speaking fee
  • a retreat
  • a "done for you" product/service (like a website)
$5,000+ ($10K-$25K-$100K)
  • a keynote address
  • longer-term coaching program
  • corporate/executive consulting

Again each business is different.  A health coach offering a nutrition plan may only charge $100.  While a corporate consultant may do a business plan for $50,000. So the price points of the funnel may be different too.

Ideally, you will be trying different things at different levels of your funnel and see what sells the best.  It's a process to get the right mix, but even while you test and refine, you'll be making much more money along the way and well into the future.

If you are a coach, consultant, speaker or other kind of "expert" service-driven entrepreneur, leveraging the power of groups is the key to growing a 6 and 7-figure business. To learn more, go to www.MoreClientsLessTime.com.

MINDSET Part 3

MINDSET
Part 3

So, what does growth-mindset look like? Well, it looks like Henry Ford, Michael Jordan, Coach John Wooden, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Thomas Edison, Jack Welch, and Winston Churchill. Let me explain. According to Dr. Dweck in Mindset, a growth-mindset is more concerned about learning than grades. Thus, growth-mindsets find new ways to create learning. Henry Ford showed this love for learning over his paycheck by constantly taking a new position at the bottom of a new job every time that he just mastered his old one. People thought he was crazy not to stay in the job that he had mastered. And they thought that he was even crazier to take a pay-cut to go back to the bottom of a new job. He did it because along with his vision, the learning was more important than the paycheck and praise.
According to Dr. Dweck, a growth-mindset never rest on their laurels as the best, but keeps making an effort to learn and to become even better. This is exactly what Michael Jordan did. He was always willing to work harder than anyone else, even at the height of his career. Former Bulls assistant coach John Bach called him, “A genius who constantly wants to upgrade his genius.”
In addition, Dr. Dweck shares that a growth-mindset teacher or coach doesn’t judge, but in contrast, gives equal treatment to each youth. This is exactly what Coach John Wooden did at UCLA as he equally expected each and every player to get a little bit better every day while equal concern, compassion, and consideration for each and every one of his players were always priorities of the highest order for him. Concern for his players were even more important than winning. And as you probably already know, Coach John Wooden won a lot!
A growth-mindset doesn’t make excuses, even when they have good excuses. One of Coach John Wooden’s star basketball players, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, could have made lots of excuses when basketball outlawed his signature shot, the dunk. Instead, he went right to work on his other shots; perfecting them. His skyhook shot became unstoppable and carried him, his teammates, and future teams/organizations to many, many victories over the years. His growth-mindset coach did a great job teaching him a growth-mindset and countless people benefitted from it.
Similar to Coach Wooden, Thomas Edison was a growth-mindset type of person who also helped others become growth-mindset. Not only did he model and live a growth-mindset, but he also mentored the previously mentioned Henry Ford and laid the way at General Electric for future CEO, Jack Welch.
Thomas Edison was once asked by a reporter what it felt like to have failed 10,000 times to create a light bulb. A fixed-mindset would have seen each one of these attempts as horrible failures and would never have been able to persevere long enough to create a better light bulb. Thomas Edison, however, didn’t look at life like this. His growth-mindset framed that constant internal conversation going on in his head of: What is happening? What does it mean? What should I do about it? Edison knew exactly what to do. He smiled at that reporter and said, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” Edison knew that with each way that wouldn’t work, he was one step closer to finding the way that would work.
Jack Welch was the most widely admired, studied, and imitated CEO of his time. And one of the things that made him great was that he surrounded himself with great people that he had selected through mindset rather than pedigree.
Welch was growth-mindset all the way through. He was constantly learning. And when he needed to know more he went directly to his front-line employees to figure out what was going on. He respected these people, and learned from them. It was always “we” not “I” with Jack Welch while he ran General Electric.
General Electric was always about growth, not self-importance under Welch. He shut down elitism. Got rid of brutal bosses. Always asked his people at all levels what they liked and didn’t like about the company. His approved way to being more productive was through mentoring, not through terror. Leaders were encouraged to share credit for their ideas and successes with their teams. In the end, Welch as well as thousands of others, benefited immensely from his growth-mindset.
Finally, there is Winston Churchill. Being a leader is stressful, especially during wartime. And as mentioned earlier, fixed-mindsets tend to eliminate their competition and silence the critics so they get only good news from their subordinates and thus continue look good, whether it’s true or not. This type of silence that only allows one voice, and sometimes even only one way of thinking comes from a dangerous phenomenon called groupthink according to Dr. Dweck. Fortunately for England, Churchill was a growth-mindset type of person that combatted groupthink by setting up a special department. The job of this department was to give Churchill all the worse news. This helped keep Churchill out of a false sense of security and forced him and his team to keep learning and searching for better ways to beat Hitler.

Next month’s article will explain how to be a growth-mindset type of person…

The Hidden Technique to Learn More Without Studying

Do you want a more effective way to learn?
Stop studying.
Start testing.
According to research in Science magazine, it turns out that there's actually a better way to learn than studying for a test.  That better way is to stop studying, and take an actual test.
Testing, it turns out, is more effective at helping people retrieve knowledge later on than more traditional studying.  Some of those studying techniques include content review over sequenced chunks of time (or cramming), as well as concept mapping, which asks the learner to draw out connections between the different ideas of content on paper.
The conclusions from this research support the theory that people learn by doing.  It also shows why, when it comes to changing behaviors, there’s a big gap between knowing something and doing it.  (Or as I like to say, what is common sense is not often common practice.)
It may feel risky to try something new.    It moves us out of our comfort zone.
But isn't that what learning is?  Expanding beyond the familiar?  Testing (and doing) blazes new trails in our neurological wiring.  The more we activate these synaptic connections, the stronger the learning.
So stop studying.  And start testing.
