The framework to outwit the devil. Part 2 - Meet the "other self"

Andrew Carnegie talked about the idea of the "Other Self"

Nearly all of us have a spiritual being inside of us.

It is called the "other self".

Your body and mind holds the physical self.

Your "other self" lives in your heart and soul.

People are just too busy, too afraid, too smart, too stubborn, or lazy to discover it.

Most are completely unaware of it's existence and all the power and clarity that discovering your "other self" can give you.

Mr Carnegie told Napoleon Hill that if he ever did discover his "other self" it would make itself known in an unusual emergency.

Your outer self is away with you even if your not listening
Why did he say this?

When look I back at my own life... When I was headstrong I hit roadblocks.

If my pride and stubbornness lead me down a road it often turned into dead end.

After getting mad, at myself, for reaching a dead end.

I can admit that I am lost.

When I am lost I am ready to accept help.

If I am quiet and ready to listen...

This is the time I am ready for wisdom of my "other self" .

It wants to guide and advise me.

I just need to ready to listen.

This is how most people discover their "other self"

Being introduced by adversity is something I like to avoid.

The thing is adversity is the only thing that causes most humans to shut-up and listen.

There is no nice way to say this.

We love living in our heads.

We love to find meaning in meaningless things.

Nearly everyone rather hear themselves talk then to listen.

And all this is quite distracting.

It is best to learn the first time and start listening more.

First off start just admitting you don't have all the answers.

Listen more think less.

Meditate so you can clear your mind, focus your life, and open yourself up to your true potential.

Your "other self" is a gift

Pray to your higher power (I call mine god) before you need help.

Your "other self" is often the vehicle that provides the answer.

Be perceptive of knowledge beyond your intellect and wisdom greater then your years.

And have faith that you are important.

You have blessed with the gift of an "other self" to lead you to your true purpose.

When you focus on all your energies on your true defining purpose everything else falls into place.

Next month we will tackle fear.

The fences fear creates. The framework to outwit the devil.

In Napoleon Hill's Outwitting the Devil Mr Hill interviews the Devil.

Many believe that this conversation is an imaginary convention that services a literary vehicle.

I believe the writing transcends the wisdom of one man. That said I am biased and I want to believe.

In the beginning the Devil confesses his power comes from leveraging minds of man.

We also learn that the antidote to this is free thought.

Today we talk about fear.
The Devil: To be sure, I employ tricks and devices to control human thought. My devices are clever ones too.

Mr Hill: Go ahead and describe your clever tricks, Your Majesty.

The Devil: One of my cleverest devices for mind control is fear.
I plant the seed of fear in the minds of people, and as these seeds germinate and grow, through use,
I control the space they occupy. The six most effective fears are the fear of poverty, criticism, ill health, loss of love, old age, and death.

Mr Hill: Which of these six fears serves you most often, Your Majesty?

The Devil: The first and the last— poverty and death!
At one time or another during life I tighten my grip on all people through one or both of these.
I plant these fears in the minds of people so deftly that they believe them to be their own creation. I accomplish this end by making people believe I am standing just beyond the entrance gate of the next life, waiting to claim them after death for eternal punishment.
Of course I cannot punish anyone, except in that person's own mind, through some form of fear— but fear of the thing which does not exist is just as
useful to me as fear of that which does exist. All forms of fear
extend the space I occupy in the human mind.
-Napoleon Hill  Outwitting the Devil.

The essence of this conversations is fear can limit us. The fears are not often real.  And imagined fears are just as powerful as real ones.

Poverty, criticism, ill health, loss of love, old age, and death are all powerful fears.

Fear of poverty can prevent from starting a business.
Fear of criticism will stop people from performing or creating.
Fear of ill health and old age can prevent you from living life.
Fear of lost of love will allow you stay in a unhappy situation,
Fear of death will makes us afraid of flying.

Yet with free thought we can chose to do to the thing we fear and unlock our true potential.

This is way free thought is the antidote to fear.

The framework to outwitt the devil. Part 1 - Intro

You can be exposed to many different philosophies, models, ways of thinking, and technologies when studying self improvement.

Many of these philosophies seem to conflict.

So how do you internalize this wisdom in a way that is useful for you?

The answer is personal for everyone.

My mentor told me about Napoleon Hill's Outwitting the Devil and this book has become my answer.

Outwitting the Devil: The Secret to Freedom and Success

Written by Napoleon Hill in 1938. Deemed to controversial to be published. It was hidden in a drawer for over 70 years.

In 2011 the book was finally published long after the death of Napoleon and his wife.

Over the next few months, I will be sharing my interpretations and wisdom gained from this book.

It is my intention to give you insights into my philosophy, simplify your belief system, and bring you happiness.

Today's I am writing about the history around the writing of this book.

Napoleon Hill met Andrew Carnegie in 1908.  Mr Hill wanted a way to pay for law school. Mr Carnegie wanted a factual record of what made men successful.

The result was 20 years of research and interviews with over 500 individuals viewed as successful and 2000 who where called failures.

Napoleon Hill received no pay for agreeing to this opportunity and had to "hustle" to make a living.

In the 30 years it took to write write Think and Grow Rich and Outwitting the Devil the world experienced World War I, The Roaring 20's,  The Great Depression, and the beginning of World War II.

Napoleon personally faced poverty, the lost of his savings and his home in the Catskills Mountains, and had to run for his life.

This experience was needed to discover what Andrew Carnegie calls your "other self"'.  Stay tune for next month's post about the "other self"'

Ready - Set - Jump

A Flying Finch
What a beautiful fall it has been. Once again, the Northeast has been alive with a vivid array of colors, both on the ground and in the air. I’ve always loved watching clouds.
As a Keynote speaker and presenter, I’ve flown over the tops of the clouds many times. I’d look out at those big fluffy puffy clouds and imagine what it would be like to be in them. They just looked so soft and inviting.

After years of hearing me talk about clouds, my husband surprised me with a gift certificate to go skydiving. Since I am beyond young and daring, I did a tandem jump and was completely hooked. I trusted my guide, so it was nothing but exhilarating and exciting when we stepped out of the plane, leaping into the air. We went into free fall at about 120 miles per hour, feeling the impact of both gravity and the wind. As soon as the rip cord was pulled, everything changed. It was quiet, and I had time to marvel at the landscape below, brimming with color and beauty. The whole experience reinforced my love of nature and life, but it also reminded me how different our views of an experience can be. When I told people what I’d done, many said, “I could never do that.” But what’s fearful to you may not be fearful to me, and vice-versa.

It’s been proven that the number one fear is Public Speaking—not skydiving. The number two fear is meeting strangers. Maybe that’s because we were taught not to talk to strangers when we were growing up. For speakers, that means conquering the two biggest fears known to man—at the same time! Before my jump, I learned that proper preparation is the only way
you can jump with confidence. If you don’t prepare well, it truly is like jumping out of a plane without a parachute. Likewise, taking the time to properly prepare for your speech will increase the confidence you need to jump on stage.

It starts with a proper pre-assessment of your audience. Reach out to your event contact and ask for an introduction to 2 or 3 members of the audience so you can contact them ahead of time. Getting an idea of their expectations will reduce the fear of jumping into a new experience with an unknown group of people. Prior to the event, schedule a few minutes to stand on the platform you will be speaking from. Without the audience there, you will be able to get comfortable with the space you have to work with. Some speakers prefer quiet time before they speak, while others enjoy connecting with attendees, event planning staff, and other speakers before they take the stage. People always feel privileged to meet the speaker ahead of time. As a speaker, the more connection you have with your audience beforehand, the more likely you are to feel comfortable and confident when you stand in front of them.

One must be clear, precise, and active when  jumping out of a plane. Make sure you are clear, concise, and active during your speech. Make sure you have command over the ideas, knowledge, insights, and wisdom you will be sharing. It is a choice. You can let your fears interfere with your ability to jump onto your platform, or you can confidently prepare yourself to jump with both feet. When you chose preparation, you’ll experience that rush of adrenaline and feel free as a bird.
