What is Your Communication LifeStyle?

By Carolyn Finch

As I waited at the stop sign for the children to
get off the bus, I noticed a mother with a stroller and a sleeping baby waiting at the bus stop. I was only about 15 feet from the front of the bus and could see parents standing around. This mother was holding her smart phone with her head bent downward and at times would stop and then text  or enter a number and then the phone went back up to her ear. I never saw her check on the baby in the stroller nor did she look up. Soon a cute little light skinned boy with curly brown hair about 5 or 6 years old jumped off the bus and waved a paper with a painting at his mother. Mom paid no attention to the boy so he grabbed her leg and shouted "look mom look mom"
She looked down at him and shouted "I told you not to talk to me when I'm on the phone."

My heart sank and I wanted to cry as I'm sure that the little boy wanted to do. What an ideal time for communication. This amazing transition time when a child is enthusiastic about something he has created and at the same time happy to be getting home from school. Was this a dysfunctional communication moment?  It certainly appeared that way. Would this be the base to poor communication for the next few minutes, hours and maybe even days?

The  one major aspect of being a human being is that we are able to communicate orally. Have we forgotten to be thankful for this gift of true conversation? With the advent of smart phones we have a new addiction. Research shows that the average person with a smartphone texts an average of 100 time a day wow! This type of communication determines our lifestyle and our lifestyle determines our communication.

If we have an addiction of any kind such as shopping, drinking, drugs, sickness, foods whatever,
our typical conversation will include words, phrases and stories related to our addiction. Doesn't sound like a learning listener and quality conversation to me. Therefore my challenge to you as a Blog reader is to look at everyone you speak with, eye to eye and belly to belly. This way you will be listening to the other person and as a reward you will learn something from what they say. So add to your communication lifestyle the ability to listen with your eyes.

Moving Well

I grew up on Long Island and my parents were very understanding of the time I spent with my friends.
Therefore in sixth grade I traveled with my friend Wendy to a little town in Connecticut. The name of the town was Woodbury. We stayed with her grandmother and grandfather in their home on a main street. I remember the floors slanted a bit and I though the house was wonderful. When I moved to Cheshire, CT many years later I went to Woodbury and found the Wheeler house, now  a part of the historic district of town. I passed the house several times when my stepdaughter and husband moved to Woodbury and would say tell the story repeatedly about my sixth grade adventures with the Wheelers.

Since then I have moved several times. I also have moved in and out of offices and a pre-school, private kindergarten building that we owned. Moving our belongings and furniture is something that most peoples can relate to these days. However moving is decreasing. According to the census only 2.5 percent of people in the United States moved last year.
Perhaps you have moved due to a job change, marital status change, health problems, downsizing a home, less garden and upkeep. Whatever your personal reason for moving you probably remember the boxes, the friends and family that have helped you and oh yes, the pizza and fast food meals in between.#
In my Keynote Speech Live Life Every Golden Minute (and sometimes titled Taking Care of You) I speak about the Trinity of health: moving well, eating well and thinking well. I usually refer to the individual who 1. Needs to move their physical body well. 2. Understand how to move up, move over and move out when appropriate and 3. Move within the team through ideas and energy.

All of these happened during our move. My son and grandsons helped joyously and we were thankful that they could help us as we made another move to a place for people over 55, next to the town of Woodbury CT. The street we moved to is Wheeler Rd.

Recipe for Mediocrity

Hello Speakers, Business Owners, Future Entrepreneurs and Big Dreamers,
The United States has a $1.5 billion annual destruction problem. This destruction problem is caused by crazy wild pigs. These wild pigs, also known as "Wild Boar" are the culprits and they occupy 47 states in our country. They are one of the most invasive species known to mankind.
Some of these wild boar weigh between 450 to 600 pounds, and can run as fast as 35 miles an hour. They have sharp tusks that can grow up to 4 inches long and can snap a human leg like a small tree branch in seconds. They literally eat anything their path, eggs, berries, wood, small animals, waste, and possibly inexperienced hunters. They are truly wild and highly dangerous. The following story is a bit of fact and fiction.

Just ask one town in Millstone, Utah, a farming community that was  ravaged by these creatures. The town finally came together and pooled their money so they could seek out the most experienced hunters they could find to solve this wild boar overpopulation problem. They combined thousands of dollars to hire a team of the best hunters. The day came when these experienced hunters rolled into town their shiny trucks, plus a multitude of equipment and a team of hunters dressed in what looked like SWAT gear. They took the money town residents compiled and they headed into the woods to do their deed. Just about a week later they came out of the woods, but were not as enthusiastic as when they were entering the woods,  their vehicles were dented and damaged, hunters were hurt, equipment was damaged along with their egos and the results were dismal. Only a couple of wild boar were dead in the back of one of their trucks. They just kept rolling through town and never stopped and never came back. The town of Millstone was at their wits end and almost out of money. So they put an ad in the paper, labeled: "ANYONE" that can help our town eradicate "Wild Pigs!!!" PLEASE RESPOND!
About a week later, this old rickety flatbed truck comes rolling in to Millstone. Behind the wheel of the truck sat this old timer long with white hair and a dirty white beard with a stub of a cigar sticking out of the corner of his mouth. He pulled up to Town Hall and said to the authorities:
“I’m here to get the pigs.”
They came outside to see his equipment and they were flabbergasted to see he had a 40-year-old rusted flatbed truck stacked with a lot of lumber, boxes and boxes of nails, and bags of feed that probably weighed close to 3000 pounds. The authorities said to the old man "you must be kidding, you're going to kill yourself, go home now". The old man just stared at them and got in his truck and headed into the woods to get the pigs.
About a week later, this rickety old truck began to make its way out of the woods on this dirt mountain road heading into the town of Millstone. Front tires of the truck were lifting up because it had so many dead Wild Boar on the back of it.
The old geezer got out of the truck with that unlit cigar sticking on a corner of his mouth and the town residents asked him how he was able to accomplish this?
The Old Man stood there in front of everybody and said it was quite simple. The other hunters you hired thought they could meet these Wild Boar head-on with big guns and fancy equipment, maybe, in some cases it will work. These animals are born killers and every waking moment of their life is about the hunt it's about bringing food back to their sounder to feed their young. Wild Boar are just about the most ambitious motivated creature on planet Earth.
I just taught them how to become mediocre.
The first day I showed up I found a small open field and pulled my truck up in the middle of the field. I opened up about 300 pounds of feed and dumped it in the middle of the field. And I went and sat in my truck for the rest of the day. Throughout the night I could see a few of these wild boar going to the pile of feed the following night it quadrupled. On day three, I took my lumber and made two sides of the fence connecting them in an L shape fashion and I dumped about another 500 pounds of feed in the corner and headed back to my truck for the night. I estimate at least two dozen wild boar were on the scene. On day four, I built side three of the fence connecting it to side one and side two. Now I had this U-shaped corral and then filled the corral with about 1000 pounds of feed. That night, I assumed at least four dozen wild boar were on the scene. On day five, I built the final side of the fence and left it lying on the ground and I dumped the rest of the feed that night into the corral. Just as expected the boar trotted into corral to feast on the feed and when that happened I propped up side four the fence and backed my truck up against it and trapped them. As I looked into the corral some of them were so full they were sleeping. I stood on the truck and it was just like shooting fish in a barrel except this time shooting wild pigs in the corral.
The old man said mediocrity isn't something you're born with he stated “it's an environment.” It's who you hang around with and what your tuned into every day. The environment becomes a part of you and you a part of it. Once it influences you over time it grows into habit. If that habit stays with you then you have ordained your destiny.
These wild boar were not use to getting something handed to them, they are born hunters. But each night, they could run into the middle of the field and they became comfortable getting something for nothing. I created a lazy environment for them. “I’ve learned one thing in my 70 years and that's if you give something to somebody continually as a hand out you will drain their drive, their perseverance and their will. Then you have them relegated to be dependent on that environment. This environment was mediocrity.
That is how I caught the wild boar.

Be an Electrific Lover

 Be Electrific Day
Today is Be Electrific Day. It is always Feb 11th. This is a day to honor the birth of creative Innovator and inventor Thomas A. Edison on his birthday. It is also a day to discover the electricity within your own body. Yes you are electric! I started this day 17 years ago. It is listed annually in Chase’s Book of Events along with the pending holiday Saint Valentine’s Day. Many electrific activities happen throughout the country including Electrific Day parties.   http://theyearoflivingunofficially.com/02/11/be-electrific-day

Thomas A. Edison

The Invention of the Light Bulb
Edison knew life could be improved when light was brighter, daily kerosene smells from lamps abolished, and when there were opportunities to use electric lights during the darkest hours of the night. He had over 10,000 attempts before he was able to create the amazing filter he needed for his light bulb. It is was said that he was on a camping trip with his friends and they had caught several fish. Edison was angry because he didn’t catch any. So he broke his bamboo pole in half and threw it is the fire. As it burned he saw the bamboo last longer than the other sticks. That “aha” moment, was an opportunity for Edison to create a carbon filament made from cardboard so he could use it in the light bulb. It lasted longer than the others with which he had experimented.

Passion drives results
Thomas Edison was not the only person who invented the light bulb. He was the only one who secured funding to create an economical way to distribute the power needed to light several light bulbs. He not only completed his creation of the light bulb along with his team but was passionate about it. He then had to be creative and innovative in his marketing to the public. Edison introduced the light bulb by having light bulbs put into gas lamps on Maiden Lane in New York City. He had a great ceremony and when he flipped the switch many lights came on at the same time.

Use your personal treasures
How are you using your personal treasures from inside to be inventive, innovative and sharing with those who need your light in their lives. We are all conductors of electricity and when we are passionate and a lover of life, that energy flows in great abundance and we become Electrific. Will you be an Electrific Lover of life on Valentine’s Day and every day? Think of how you can bring others out of darkness with the words you say the thoughtful actions you display and the kindness you share with those who need a tiny touch of love to instigate a smile, a laugh or the ability to make a major decision. So - Happy Be Electrific Day and Valentines’ Day too.   http://www.giftypedia.com/Be_Electrific_Day
